Buttons and Flowers and Bows, oh my!

bows

This past weekend I finally attempted to create my own hair bows. I was really happy with how they turned out! My sister perfected sewing the felt flowers while I wielded my hot glue gun to make the ribbon lined alligator clips.

Inspiration from here, here, and here.

Red Velvet Cheeseball

My latest foray into baking led me to a gorgeous looking recipe. So gorgeous, in fact, that I didn’t even think about the taste until after the almost finished product was chilling in the refrigerator. I’d never had red velvet cake before (gasp!) I was very doubtful that I would like the taste. I thought I’d be doomed to admire this cheeseball’s beauty from afar.. Then the moment of truth came this morning. I took the hardened, bright red cheeseball out of the fridge and rolled it in mini chocolate chips. I grabbed a vanilla wafer and braced myself… and… IT WAS DELICIOUS! Thank God for cream cheese. I got this recipe from Taste and Tell. And yes, my cheeseball is on a tupperware lid.. how genious is that for storage?

Homemade Magic Wand

wand3

Thanks to a recent Dora the Explorer episode, a little girl I know has been requesting a magic wand. I remember my sister having a few when she was younger, so I had something in mind right away. I apologize for only having a bad picture of the finished product.

For this project, you’ll need:

  • 2 8.5” x 11” sheets of felt (I used a purple sheet and a black glittery sheet)
  • A 10” section of a thin dowel rod
  • One pack of embroidery floss and needle
  • Stuffing ( I used tissue paper)
  • Glitter craft spray (optional)
  • Korker ribbons (optional - I created my own using this tutorial)
  1. Start by cutting a long piece of felt to wrap around the wand. Mine was around 2” wide by 11” long.
  2. I taped one side of this felt to my pre-cut dowel rod, wrapped it around, and stitched it together. I sewed the bottom shut, and left the top open.
  3. Cut 2 matching pieces out of the other piece of felt. I stuck with the traditional star shape. Each piece was around 3.5” in diameter.
  4. Sew the star pieces together, leaving the very bottom two sides open. This is where it gets tricky. Stuff as much of the star as you can.
  5. If you are adding ribbons, take one and pinch it together between the two star pieces. Sew it into the star, making sure that you leave the middle bottom of the star open.
  6. Stuff the felt covered wand stick into the middle bottom of the star. Make sure it is far enough into the star (or whatever shape you chose) and sew it into place. I stitched the star onto the wand felt that was stuffed inside of it. Don’t worry if it looks a little funky, it adds to the charm!
  7. You should have one last corner of the star to stitch up. Don’t forget to add your last ribbon here by pinching it between the edges of the star again.
  8. Trim off any loose threads.
  9. You could be finished at this point, but my wand was supposed to be very sparkly, so I took it outside at this point and sprayed it with a non-toxic glitter spray.
  10. Let it dry and then let the magic happen!
